OWEN
ince
the late 1970s, Owen Rising Elk Marcus has been coaching and
teaching others how to coach. Owen began creating Shamanic
Coaching in 1982 when he started studying and uniting innovative
approaches with ancient traditional practices to assist clients.
Owen first used these approaches in his own businesses. He
went on to integrate them into his private practice and his
corporate training and consulting practice. Over the last
25 years, Owen has worked with organizations such as IBM,
GE and the City of Phoenix. He co-founded the Scottsdale Institute
for Health and Medicine, Inc., which developed a premier Mindfulness
Stress Reduction program for local hospital networks, corporations
and municipalities. Today, the simplicity of mindfulness is
integrated into all the work Owen does with his clients, including
what some call his mindfulness coaching.
In 1996,
Owen closed his 17-year-old business in Scottsdale, Arizona,
to create a simpler life in northern Idaho. He now operates
a private practice from an office in downtown Sandpoint for
the local community while assisting his national clientele
over the phone. He recently built a house at the base of the
Selkirk Mountain range just west of town. There are no houses
from his back door to the Canadian border which is 50 miles
to the north.
Since
the mid-1990's, Owen has participated in and led men's groups.
In a desire to deepen men's change, Owen created The Healing
Journey, a process that gently assists a man in
traveling back to the origins of a problem to generate a shift
that will manifest itself in the man's life changing. The
Healing Journey evolved out of Owen's study and experience
in multiple psychological and shamanic fields.

Owen's
academic training began with his undergraduate degree in psychology
in 1975 from State University of New York at Plattsburgh and
later a masters degree in health education from the Professional
Study Institute of Phoenix, Arizona. It was his postgraduate
training in fields that had not yet arrived at universities
that actually became the foundation for the work he does today.
His training and teaching in fields such as body-center psychotherapy,
Somatic Coaching, Erickson Hypnosis, traditional Hawaiian
Kahuna healing practices and Native American teachings have
been woven together to form the groundwork for Shamanic Coaching.
They all bring a perspective to working with clients that
honors them and their journeys.
Bringing
in innovative approaches to an established profession is not
new for Owen. He did it when he operated his integrated medical
clinic in Scottsdale and when he co-created corporate training
programs for Fortune 100 companies. Today, he brings the connection
to deeper aspects of life that ancient traditions offer and
the pragmatism of business to Shamanic Coaching. As a member
of the International Association of Coaches (ICA), Owen adheres
to the professional and ethical guidelines of this organization
for experienced coaches. He is also a member of the Society
of Shamanic Practitioners which "supports the re-emergence
of shamanism into modern, western culture." The Society
of Shamanic Practitioners is comprised of members who are
"degreed and licensed healthcare practitioners, psychologists
and/or social workers who help people by using shamanic interventions
in their practices along with conventional western therapies."
During
his 30 years of private practice, Owen has assisted more than
2,000 clients and performed over 20,000 sessions in varied
venues. This experience generates a large base of experience
upon which to draw. He applies that experience to his blog:

From
his 20-plus years of training in ancient traditions, he has
been honored as a pipe carrier for the Métis (mixed
blood) lineages. From that lineage, he leads Sweat Lodges
for his men's group. The integration of the sacred allows
Owen to bring forth in his clients their own deep connection
to their renewal source. It is Owen's belief that when we
connect to more than the material world, we lead a richer
and more productive life.
